Single Tulip Poplar Flower

Tulip or Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera)

Family: Magnolia (Magnoliaceae)
Type: Deciduous Tree
Native Range: Eastern North America
Sun: Full sun
Location: Breezy Acres Apiary, Elon, NC
Forage: Nectar and pollen
NOTES:
Flowering begins around April 25th to May 24th in Piedmont of NC. The flowers on this tree are the primary nectar source of honey bees in the Piedmont of NC as well as a major honey plant in the eastern United States, yielding a dark reddish, fairly strong honey. Under normal conditions, one tree can produce 5-10 lbs of nectar. However, recent studies indicate there is a problem with decreased nectar secretion that may be attributed to climate change.
